Leflunomide, known as Arava is used for treatment of rheumatoid arthiritis, after the medications used for the treatment are unable to control the symptoms. It is often not prescribed to young women as it can be present in the body for a long time even after being discontinued and therefore cause birth defects. It belongs category of medications called as Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (DMARDs).
It decreases the damage to joints and the disability due to rheumatoid arthritis. It restricts the formation of DNA, which is necessary for developing these cells, esp. those in immune system. It suppresses the immune system to decrease inflammation which leads to pain and swelling. It is typically prescribed alone. Leflunomide suppresses immune cells by inhibiting dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, an enzyme that is necessary for the production of DNA and RNA. Without DNA and RNA the cells cannot or exist.
