Deferoxamine, known as the drug Desferal, performs the function of binding iron and removing it from the blood stream. Desferal is used for treatment of iron overload due to blood transfusions in children atleast three years of age and in adults. It has poor oral availability. Generally, iron is removed much more efficiently when it is given over a long period of time. It is found to be ineffective in some patients due to the poor compliance. It helps in reversing cardiac arrhythmias and left-ventricular dysfunction.

  • Before using deferoxamine, inform your healthcare provider in case you have kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, vision or hearing problems, asthma or other breathing disorder, low levels of calcium in your blood, or a parathyroid disorder.

Desferal DOSAGE

  • Deferoxamine is sometimes injected into a vein through an IV, and may be given for several hours in a row.
  • It must be mixed with a diluent before injecting.
  • It is best to use deferoxamine within 3 hours of diluting, and within 24 hours.

  • drowsiness, confusion, mood changes, increased thirst, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting;
