For the treatment to work, these cancerous cells need to have EFGR. It is also known by its generic name Iressa. Gefitinib is also used in clinical trials for other types of cancer.

Genefitinib is a kind of targeted therapy which targets and binds the EGFR found on the surface of the cell. Though, this receptor is found on the surface of many cancerous as well as normal cells, by binding the receptors the drug restricts the path that leads to cell division. Each type of targeted therapy works differently but all of them interfere with the ability of the cancerous cell to grow.
